Andorra rides the eastern Pyrenees like a high ridge between France and Spain, and its altitude slaps first-timers with weather they never saw coming. Andorra la Vella already sits at 1,023 meters above sea level, Europe's loftiest capital, and the ski resorts and hiking trails climb even higher. Expect real alpine seasons here. Cold winters. Mild summers. Shoulder months flip from warm sun to sudden chill in hours. Winter runs late November through March. Valley thermometers dip to -2°C (27°F) overnight and seldom crawl past 8°C (48°F) by day. Snow stays reliable at resort height, and Grandvalira plus Vallnord open early December and ski into April. Summer is the quiet ace up Andorra's sleeve. July peaks at 26°C (79°F) in the valleys, nights cool to 11°C (52°F), and Pyrenean meadows glow emerald. Rain spreads fairly evenly across the calendar. Yet late spring and late summer turn wettest. May and August each log 86 to 89 mm. Afternoon storms roll through fast, scrub the air, and sharpen the views. Remember the altitude tax. A sunny afternoon feels balmy on Andorra la Vella's shopping lanes. But climb 500 meters and the temperature drops fast. This vertical swing keeps the weather interesting. Layering is not optional. It is the national dress code.

Best Time to Visit

Recommended timing for different travel styles.

Relaxation and Spa
June through September. Andorra has no coastline. Yet its thermal spa culture, anchored by the Caldea complex in Escaldes-Engordany, shines when you can soak and then wander the valleys in warm weather. July and August highs of 25°C to 26°C (77°F to 79°F) let outdoor terraces and mountain air work their magic.
Cultural Exploration
September and October. Summer crowds vanish. Daytime stays mild at 16°C to 21°C (60°F to 70°F). Andorra la Vella's Romanesque churches, the Casa de la Vall, and the surprisingly good National Automobile Museum feel effortless without peak-season lines. Autumn color in the Pyrenean valleys is free dessert.
Adventure and Hiking
Late June through early October. Snow has retreated from most high trails by late June. The GR11 route and Coma Pedrosa summit stay open through September. July gives the longest daylight and warmest footing. Yet August storms reward early starts. September cools the air and empties the paths. Many hikers call that the better deal.
Budget Travel
January through March, excluding the Christmas and New Year window, and then again in May and early June. Midweek ski rates drop outside school holidays. Late spring sits between winter sports and summer hiking, when Andorra is quietest and accommodation is cheapest.

What to Pack

Essentials and seasonal recommendations for Andorra.

Year-Round Essentials
A quality layering system
non-negotiable in Andorra. The temperature differential between a sunny valley terrace and a shaded mountain trail can be 10°C or more within the same afternoon.
A packable waterproof shell
because rain or snow can arrive with little warning any month of the year.
Sturdy walking shoes with good grip
earn their place even if you have no plans beyond Andorra la Vella's steep cobbled streets.
Sunscreen with high SPF
matters more than you might expect; UV intensity increases with altitude, and Andorra's thin mountain air provides less atmospheric filtering.
Sunglasses with UV protection
are equally important, in winter when snow glare compounds the effect.
A refillable water bottle
keeps you hydrated on trails where the tap water is clean and drinkable.
A small daypack
rounds out the essentials, useful for carrying layers you have shed plus water and snacks on any excursion beyond the town center.
Winter (December through March)
Clothing
Thermal base layers, both top and bottom, A proper insulated jacket rated for below-freezing temperatures, Waterproof ski pants
Footwear
Insulated waterproof boots with ankle support
Accessories
Warm gloves, A beanie or balaclava, Wool or synthetic hiking socks
Spring (April through May)
Clothing
A fleece or light down mid-layer, A breathable waterproof jacket, Convertible hiking trousers
Footwear
Waterproof hiking boots
Accessories
A warm hat, Light gloves
Layering Tip
The layering principle intensifies in spring because mornings can be near freezing while afternoons climb past 15°C.
Summer (June through August)
Clothing
Lightweight breathable clothing for warm valley days, A fleece, A rain shell, Quick-dry fabrics
Footwear
Proper hiking boots remain the right footwear for mountain trails. Trail runners work on well-maintained lower paths.
Accessories
A wide-brimmed hat or cap
Autumn (September through November)
Clothing
A warm mid-layer, Waterproof outer layer, Long trousers
Accessories
Gaiters can be useful for late-autumn trails with early snow or deep leaf litter.
Layering Tip
Similar to spring but trending colder. By November, winter-weight layers should be in the bag for anyone heading above the valley floor.
Plug Type
Type C and Type F
Voltage
230V
Adapter Note
Travelers from the UK, North America, or Australia will need an adapter. Those arriving from France or Spain can use their chargers as-is.
Skip These Items
Bulky ski equipment at home unless you are particular about your setup. Rental shops in Pas de la Casa and the Grandvalira base areas are well-stocked and save you hauling gear through airports and the winding mountain road from Barcelona or Toulouse. Heavy cotton jeans are poor mountain wear in any season because they absorb water, dry slowly, and provide no insulation when wet. Formal clothing is unnecessary; Andorra's dining and nightlife scene runs casual, and even the better restaurants in Andorra la Vella do not enforce dress codes. Umbrella-only rain plans fall short here, as mountain wind renders umbrellas useless on exposed trails and even in the valleys during storms; a proper rain jacket is the correct answer. High heels or any smooth-soled footwear will betray you on Andorra's steep streets and stone paths, when wet or icy.
